Julien Alfred stuns Sha’Carri Richardson in 100m to win St. Lucia’s 1st Olympic gold – Repeating Islands

A report by Emma Bowman for NPR.

Julien Alfred received St. Lucia its first-ever Olympic Video games medal. And never only a medal — gold — in opposition to the favourite within the 100-meter occasion.

Alfred outsprinted American Sha’Carri Richardson on Saturday evening on a wet monitor, slowing the sector.

Richardson took silver. After struggling an obvious harm this month, Richardson’s largest problem within the occasion, Shericka Jackson of Jamaica, dropped out of the 100m to deal with the 200m. Then, lower than two hours earlier than the race, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce posted a “didn’t begin.” It’s not but clear why the Jamaican, who certified for the semi-finals, was not capable of compete.

St. Lucia had its Olympics debut in 1996 in Atlanta.
